More than 200 million years ago what is now known as the Karoo today
was a marshland with endless lakes and vegetation, teeming with
pre-historical life. Over millennia climate changes turned it into a
cracked, barren land of mountains and gorges, a vast, arid
semi-desert stretching over more than 400 000 square kilometres in
the centre of South Africa. It creates the impression of a hostile
deserted land hardly supporting any life, but it is full of life if
you know where to look.
